A project's source media items--video clips, audio clips, and still images--are not stored inside a Premiere Elements project file. Instead, clips and images exist as separate media files (video files, audio files, or image files) on your hard drive.

When you select clips or images in the Project view of the Tasks panel in Premiere Elements, you can press Delete or Backspace to remove those items from the project, but the actual media files for those items remain on your hard drive.

Follow the instructions in this section if you also want to delete one or more of the media files. (You may want to delete media files to reclaim the disk space that those files use.) How to play the one on piano.

Note: This section is optional. If you want to delete a project without deleting its media files, then go to Delete a project file and scratch files below.

Important: Delete a media file only if you are certain that you do not need it currently and will not need in the future. Because Premiere Elements does not store media files inside project files, deleted media files are not available for you to use in any Premiere Elements project or in any other programs on your computer.

To delete a project's media files:

  1. In the Tasks panel, click Edit and then click Project.
  2. In the confirmation dialog box, select the option Delete Media File(s) From Disk.

  3. Repeat Steps 3 through 6 for any other source media files that you want to delete.

Note: Some of the following folders are hidden by default. If necessary, see Show hidden files, folders, filename extensions | Windows XP, Vista, Windows 7.

To delete a project file as well as the project scratch files that Premiere Elements creates automatically:

  1. Navigate to the location on your hard drive where you saved your project.

  2. Delete the project file. If filename extensions are visible, then you see the extension .prel or on the project file.

  3. Delete the text file whose name begins with the same name as your Premiere Elements project. This file is the project's log. If filename extensions are visible, then you see the extension .log on the log file.

  4. Open each of the folders in the list below and then delete the subfolder or files whose name matches (or begins with) the name of the Premiere Elements project that you are deleting.

Note: By default, Premiere Elements creates these folders in the same location as your project file. However, if you have chosen a custom location for any scratch files (in Edit > Preferences > Scratch Disks), then one or more of the folders in this list will be in your custom location instead of in the same location as the project file.
